ABSI Calculator
Tool Introduction:
Calculate your Body Shape Index (ABSI) based on gender, age, height, weight and waist circumference to assess premature mortality risk. Unlike traditional BMI, ABSI focuses on abdominal fat distribution, providing a more effective tool for evaluating health risks.

What is Body Shape Index (ABSI)?
The Body Shape Index (ABSI) is a health metric developed by Nir and Jesse Krakauer in 2012 to assess the relationship between body fat distribution and mortality risk. Unlike the traditional Body Mass Index (BMI), ABSI specifically considers waist circumference, providing a more accurate reflection of health risks associated with abdominal fat accumulation.
How to Measure Waist Circumference
Steps to correctly measure your waist circumference:
1. Stand up straight with feet shoulder-width apart
2. Locate your navel (belly button)
3. Place a measuring tape horizontally around your waist at navel level
4. Maintain normal breathing - don't suck in or expand your stomach
5. Ensure the tape is snug but not digging into your skin
ABSI Calculation Formula
The ABSI formula is:
ABSI = Waist Circumference / (BMI2/3 × Height1/2)
Where:
- Waist circumference is in meters (m)
- Height is in meters (m)
- BMI = Weight (kg) / Height2 (m2)
Explanation of Power Operations in the Formula:
- BMI2/3 BMI^(2/3) means BMI raised to the power of 2/3 - calculate the cube root of BMI, then square it
- height1/2 height^(1/2) means height raised to the power of 1/2 - the square root of height
BMI = Weight(kg) / Height²(m²)
The ABSI Z-score is used to assess mortality risk, calculated as follows:
ABSI Reference Value Explanation:
- ABSImean ABSI_mean is the average ABSI value for a specific gender and age group, based on large-scale population data (NHANES)
- ABSISD ABSI_SD is the standard deviation of ABSI for a specific gender and age group, indicating data dispersion
- These reference values vary by gender and age group and are used to calculate an individual's ABSI Z-score
Calculation Example
For a 41-year-old male with a height of 173 cm, weight of 50 kg, and waist circumference of 70 cm:
Based on the calculation, the ABSI Z-score is -0.57778, which falls between -0.868 and -0.272, corresponding to a mortality risk level of Low。
ABSI and Health Risks
The ABSI Z-score is a standardized score comparing your ABSI value to the average for your age and gender group. Research shows higher ABSI values are associated with increased health risks including:
- Higher cardiovascular disease risk
- Increased type 2 diabetes risk
- Higher risk of certain cancers
- Elevated all-cause mortality
By maintaining a healthy waist circumference and weight, you can lower your ABSI value and reduce these health risks.
